The MAX strategy, GIST, is a summarizing activity that requires understanding of the 5Ws and H (Who, What, When, Where, Why and How) of a story or article.

  1. Work with your group to decide which of the 5Ws and H are the most important for your summary.
  2. Compose a summary together with your group.
  3. Challenge: cut your summary to the amount of words your teacher designates.
  4. Share: read or post your summary for the entire class to see.
